Funny to find this article as 2 hours ago I was talking to a colleague who was making this same accusation in regards to Negroponte's organization. His company wanted to partner with them but they DEMANDED that his partner in a nonprofit way only and commit hours and labor to transfer his IP and services to OLPC's servers. I wonder how often humility or arrogance from an organizations' leaderships transfers to its people.....

Great read Mark. What you write resonates really well. As another ex Inteler I always did find it difficult to understand why the upper echelons of Intel never embraced NN fully rather than work in competition.

I met NN last year in Nigeria just after Intel concluded the deal with him and before it went sour. Your description of the ego made me laugh as this is how it was. He was friendly enough to us but not very happy with what the field sales guys from Intel were doing.

I've followed the whole OLPC/Classmate debate for a while now, and I think your post really adds a lot to the discussion. We often glaze over the importance of interpersonal relationships (and, by association, inter-ego relationships) in business. I appreciate that you note Craig Barrett's opening salvo in the war "gadget!" but don't let Negroponte off the hook.

Finally, not related to this post, I have to tell you that I have the same proverb - "Vision without action is a daydream; action without vision is a nightmare" - on a post-it in plain view in my cube. Possibly my favorite...nice choice for your blog subtitle.

Keep up the good writing.
