@Cheri Setting expectations appropriately up front definitely impacts one's view of success and no doubt Negroponte learned that the hard way.

@Tomas The real question is whether a handheld can ever fully replace a standard pc, laptop or otherwise. For longer email replies, I always wait until i get to my computer vs. use my iphone, which so far has one of the best keyboard (in wide mode).

Thin clients are the future in developing countries. They are the best compromise at this junction so your opinion seems accurate to me. I keep hoping that that the second stage in another ten years will be a cheap enough computer that a full fledged hand-held will be the real end game for kids in the long haul.

When I think of Negroponte and his successes and/or failures, I can't help but think that his effort can only be seen as a failure if you look at it in the context of his goals. He set extremely unreasonable goals for himself - essentially to “brighten the lives and prospects of
hundreds of millions of kids in the developing world”. He expected to sell millions in the first few years. However, had he not been so ambitious perhaps he would not have garnered the same media attention. But for an new start-up PC company in the first 3 years of business - delivering 600,000 laptops globally is quite an achievement. And yes...his vision and the pressure it put on the PC industry to lower prices and invest in new markets is where his biggest legacy will be.

Check out our latest free report on the topic of low-cost computing - it talks a lot about Negroponte as a catalyst for low-cost computing. http://www.vitalwaveconsulting.com/publications/report_low_cost.htm
