Hi Mark,
I believe the optimism comes from the ability to connect now more than ever through viral social networks. We are no longer isolated to just a local physical network and that is empowering. We have the mode to connect on so many levels with so many other walks of life, this site as an example, to listen to others insights and share our perspectives. I believe this is a monumental time for all of us to reshape our country and world in what leadership means and how it should function. The news has talked about the CEO caps and I say hooray in that the banks that have caps will encourage those people who have been biting at the chomp to step up and prove themselves, this is capitalism and competition in pure form. True talent will go where there is a challenge and prosperity by virtue of success, not just for the big bucks. What better opportunity for those who would meet the call in the land of opportunity? The halls are empty like the winter until the season changes and we emerge with a new strain of leadership. Nature works like that, so do humans; retreat, rest, regroup, rethink, and emerge to try again.
No, Obama should not be viewed as a messiah, he is a hu-man, but with hope and a country who is willing to work together with him to make a difference from the family nucleus to the corporate boardrooms. I believe our country has always stepped up to challenges and come out a far better community for it.

Charlotte and Cheri, both good points. The key is to turn leadership into action. The quote i use in the header for my site is timeless: “Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare.”

The biggest risk is in believing Obama is some sort of messiah. You make a great point about the need for leadership everywhere - in the home, community, work. No one person can solve this problem - it will truly take everyone.

Hope from emptiness... that is so well put.

The energy that the Obama team has brought to our country - dare I say to the world - is something to be excited about... no one I know has been immune to the impact of his sweeping the White House. From baby boomers to thirty-somethings to elementary-age children to teenagers - from all ways and walks of life, team Obama has truly brought us into a new era of leadership and unity.

In my lifetime this is the first I've felt connected with government leadership. And it is the first time I've been able to converse with family, friends and my children in such an open way... about hope for the future, across party lines and person convictions.

It feels like "true" leadership. A tipping point in America. Real inspiration. There seems to be an almost universal hope in this energy of change and the positive role modeling as this new generation of leaders emerges. How exciting to be living during this historical time.
